Gum Disease Treatment Lafayette LA

Why dangerous is gum disease?
I’ve read that gum disease can contribute to heart disease and even stroke. Is this true?
Yes. Recent medical research has caused many doctors to reach a startling conclusion: gum disease, stroke, and heart disease are linked. Since heart disease is usually fatal, it is clear that gum disease is a serious matter. The American Dental Association estimates that 8 out of 10 Americans have periodontal (gum) disease. If this were any other affliction, such as AIDS or tuberculosis, it would be considered an epidemic! Most dentists think it is just that. They also knew that gum disease would never be labeled epidemic because “no one ever dies from it.” The worst is that you lose your teeth. Not pleasant – but certainly not life threatening.
But that’s all changed.

The American Academy of Periodontology reports: “studies found periodontal infection may contribute to the development of heart disease, increase the risk of premature, underweight births, and pose a serious threat to people whose health is already compromised due to diabetes and respiratory diseases.” Periodontal disease is characterized by bacterial infection of the gums. These bacteria can travel into the bloodstream – straight to the heart.

Now the Good News
With advanced periodontal disease, the treatment is surgical. Gum surgery is never fun, but it is almost always successful in controlling the condition, and it’s usually covered by common insurance plans. With mild periodontal disease, there are very effective NON-surgical procedures which, coupled with improved dental hygiene, can virtually halt the spread of the disease. This, too, is usually covered under most dental insurance plans.

White Dental Fillings Lafayette LA

No Mercury! No Metals! No Kidding!

For years, the silver-mercury amalgam was the standard filling material used in dental practices, and many practices still use it. While they are a reasonable restoration, amalgams have certain shortcomings. Metal does not bond well to teeth, so decay can and does eventually leak into the tooth. But the biggest reason many of our patients are choosing the white bonded fillings has to do with the way they look. Many people just don’t want an ugly black plug in their teeth. We offer modern, state-of-the-art restorations that are a natural-looking white, contain no metals, and can actually strengthen your teeth. They also bond very tightly with the healthy part of the tooth so there is much less chance of decay in the future.

Find Cavities Early - Dental Laser Scanner

The Laser Scanner Finds Cavities Years Earlier
Have you ever had a dentist find a cavity and place a large filling, and wondered why the filling is so large if the cavity wasn’t there just six months before? The cavity was there six months before – it just wasn’t big enough to show on X-rays, and it wasn’t visible to the dentist yet. The laser scanner can find cavities years earlier, when the small cavity can be removed and repaired with a small invisible bonded filling. Sometimes patients complain of tooth sensitivity, or mild to severe pain, yet X-rays and examination cannot pinpoint the source. The laser scanner can detect previously undetected decay and, once identified, allow us to remove the discomfort and leave you with a healthy smile. Visit us at www.samuelrmossdds.com to learn more!

Root Canal Treatment Lafayette LA

Saving Hopeless Teeth
Root Canal Dental Treatment
Teeth with roots that have been damaged or infected used to require extraction, which can cause a lot of problems and should be done as a last resort. When dental decay reaches the nerve of the tooth (or the tooth has become infected), a simple filling does not suffice. Root canal treatment can save the tooth by removing the pulp of a tooth and replacing it with a filling material. Root canals of the past were quite painful and gained a reputation as something to be avoided. However, with today’s modern anesthetics and technology, we can perform root canals that are quite tolerable and most often even painless!

Brushing Two times a Day Is A Way To Healthy Heart

This week the findings of a new study by the specialists from University College London were revealed. British experts are convinced that brushing our teeth two times a day is a perfect way not only to keep our teeth and guns healthy, or prevent bad breath, but it also a great strategy to avoid such problems as heart disease and keep away other serious cardio-vascular ailments.

According to the specialists, dental bacteria can affect our cardio-vascular health, and this study was aimed on researching the effects of our brushing habits on our heart. The experiments and surveys, led by Prof. Richard Watt from University College London, involved 11,000 male and female participants with different dental problems and heart health. The scientists analyzed medical histories of the patients, took their blood samples, interviewed them to learn more about their lifestyle, habits and family.

According to the records, 6 out of 10 participants visit a dentist once per 6 months, and 7 out of 10 participants have a habit of brushing their teeth two times a day. After analyzing the information and adjusting the data received, the specialists found out that those who brush their teeth two times a day on a regular basis have 70% lower chances to develop a heart disease. Therefore, brushing you teeth in the morning and in the evening is a way to healthy heart and living a long life.

It was a known fact that there are links between dental and cardio-vascular health, but this study became the first scientific research for the last 20 years, which was specifically carried out to understand the connections between these two factors. The findings and conclusions of the British specialists were recently published in the British Medical Journal. This week the findings of a new study by the specialists from University College London were revealed. Dental Care Lafayette LA

Dental Checkups Can Help Reveal Other Health Problems

The issues of dental care and personal hygiene are among the most topical social concerns of modern health care enthusiasts. According to the statistics, due to high prices for dental services and the requirements of our business life, very often we neglect visiting a dental specialist every 6 months for a regular checkup. This tendency is increasing, making public dental health get worse and worse.

In particular, specialists found out that lots of American people have such serious dental problem as gum disease, but they are not aware of the fact as they do not visit their dentists regularly. The same can be said about other dental diseases, which are closely linked to many serious health conditions and ailments, including heart disease, arthritis, hypertension, diabetes and many more. If we do not do regular dental checkups, we have no opportunity to get important information and prevent the development of other diseases which are very serious and sometimes even lethal.

This issue became a subject of interest of a group of dental specialists at one of the scientific centers in Virginia. As a result, one of the leaders of the research, Charles Martin, wrote a book which tells the wide audience how much oral hygiene is important for our overall health and what role it plays for maintaining excellent health or for effective weight management.

Martin underlines that in case if anything is not right in the body, there are always signs in our oral area. Therefore, dental checkup is one of the most effective ways to reveal other health problems, starting from common sore throat and ending up with increased risks for heart disease. He says that if the situation with children is more or less acceptable as children have regular checkups in their schools, adults must pay serious attention on the problem. That is why the dental specialist encourages citizens to buy affordable discounted dental plans and never miss regular checkups at their dentists.

Sedation Dentistry Lafayette LA

Sedation Dentistry, One More Solution For Dental Phobias

To continue discussing the previously mentioned issue related to increasing number of people who suffer from severe dental phobias, we’d like to talk about another very effective technique to calm down stresses and fears related to visiting a dentist. Many modern dental clinics and dental offices are offering their clients an interesting approach to treating those patients who fear of dentists: sedation dentistry.

As it becomes apparent from its name, sedation dentistry involves giving a certain sedative medication to a patient before starting actual dental treatment. Usually, a sedative is administered orally (as a pill) or intravenously. Specialists define two types of sedation dentistry techniques: conscious SD (when the patient remains awake and aware about what’s going on during the procedure) and unconscious (or sleep) SP (when the patient remains asleep during the procedure).

Actually, there are three levels or types of sedation dentistry. The first one embraces applying Nitrous Oxide, known also as ‘laughing gas’ which is believed to help patient feel more relax and establish a good connection and trust between the patient and the dental specialist. Oral conscious sedation is the second level. It involves giving the patient a special pill, which slows down metabolism of the patient and his responses slow down substantially. Oral conscious sedation
pill makes patients feel a little drowsy and considerably less sensitive to pain and discomfort linked to dental procedures.

Finally, the third type of sedation dentistry approach is called Intravenously Administered (IV) sedation. It mean using a small line in order to administer a medication and keep the patients, who have severe fears and cases of dental phobias, asleep during the whole period of the procedure. It is reported that all these three approaches work fine for the majority of the patients and can be used regardless of the type of dental procedure: a missing tooth replacement, tooth restoration, dental filling placing and so on. Ask for more information in your local dental clinics and dental offices.

TMJ Disorder Treatment
Lafayeet LA

TMJ stands for temperomandibular joint. Tempero, as in temple area of skull; mandibular as in mandible, or lower jaw; joint as in where the head and jaw meet. Problems in this joint may be caused by a misalignment of the teeth, trauma, or excess muscle tension. Cartilage buffers the two bones and five muscles that meet, but any problems in this area can create quite a bit of pain and biting difficulties.

Symptoms of TMJ include:
• Headaches
• Earaches
• Trouble/soreness opening and closing the mouth
• Clicking or popping of the jaw
• Pain in the jaw muscles
• Soreness in the area, sometimes extending to the face

Dental treatments for the condition can include replacing missing teeth, moving teeth, adjusting the bite, and filling gaps between teeth. There is no one solution that is right for all cases. Occasionally a plastic mouthpiece is used to prevent clenching or grinding that is contributing to the problem. If untreated, and in severe cases, surgery may be required to repair a badly damaged joint.
